Studio ST Architects collaborated with Design by Maggie Rosenblatt to renovate a newlywed couple’s post-war home positioned on the Upper West Side of Recent York City, Recent York. Each had separate homes crammed with lifetime possessions and different aesthetic styles.

The design challenge was to create their first home together in a big post-war cooperative constructing on the West Side of Manhattan. The newly renovated space transforms three apartments (two previously combined and an adjoining studio) right into a spacious, vivid, modern apartment.

The brand new space uses a natural, muted palette of greens, off-whites, pale yellows and taupe greys, which create a clean backdrop for the owner’s eclectic and classy collection of vintage furniture and contemporary art. Featured works include: Gustavo Ojeda“Downtown Manhattan” Krzysztof DunlapRichard Toglia, “Looking Out” i Teresa Hackett“Water Dance”.

Architect Esther Sperber, founding father of Studio ST Architects, gutted and combined two separate apartments in a post-war constructing, transforming them into one open, airy, light-filled, modern home. The resulting light-filled 3,500-square-foot apartment provides a cohesive design that blends one East Village partner’s artistic sensibilities with the opposite’s utilitarian taste.

There’s now a brand new magnificent entrance hall and gallery, a spacious lounge, formal dining room and huge kitchen-diner, in addition to a master suite plus three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a laundry room. The newlyweds purchased the previous adjoining studio, which served as a separate office/recreation area.

The architect suggested demolishing the adjoining wall and converting it right into a spacious main bedroom – the old galley-shaped kitchen became the master bathroom and huge walk-in closet. The brand new and spacious Basic Suite is a non-public haven for a pair and incorporates a luxurious bathroom with a marble bathtub and countertop.

“The challenge of this project was to create a good looking, comfortable and spacious apartment that doesn’t feel like a mix of separate units. We managed to eliminate the prevailing narrow and dark corridors to create easy and clean communication. At the guts of the apartment, we’ve got created a big foyer and art gallery, which also provides easy accessibility to the kitchen, dining room, most important apartment, front room and bedroom,” says Esther Sperber, Studio ST Architects.

The front room is open and filled with light. Artisan crafted oak bar detailing with open brass sprigs allows light to flood in while providing a way of separation. An identical cabinet built into the oak veneer above the gel-fired fireplace creates a brand new focus of the front room.

A spacious L-shaped kitchen with subdued white oak cabinets replaced a narrow galley. A retractable door, echoing the bar’s brass branching design, connects the kitchen to a more formal dining area, decorated with Asian art.

Designer Maggie Rosenblatt has retained much of the homeowners’ antique and vintage furniture, but revamped it with colourful accents for a fresh, contemporary design. She used fabrics from Henry Calvin, Jim Thompson and Mark Alexander.

“It has been great helping our clients express themselves and discovering the right way to create a cohesive presentation of their eclectic styles. I encouraged them to make daring decisions equivalent to having a contemporary kitchen with different finishes to balance the more traditional elements. In addition they took a creative leap by making a highly decorative wild style bathroom with feminine colours to balance the more industrial, large artwork. Mixing styles was an enormous a part of bringing beloved objects from throughout life right into a shared space,” says interior designer Maggie Rosenblatt.

The couple are delighted with the outcomes, especially the creative solutions and imaginative adaptations to the structural challenges within the cooperative constructing. This included working around structural columns to create cabinets and installing a ventless fireplace where pipes couldn’t be moved.

The apartment resembles a house that can also be an art gallery with museum-grade track lighting that illuminates the exhibits. The result’s a cohesive, open and flowing space, with artistic elements that highlight and define the spaces.

“Many of the art I collected was from the mid-Eighties within the East Village art scene,” says the homeowner. “East Village art galleries on the time displayed a really diverse collection of artists and styles. Most of the collected works are mainly semi-abstract oil and acrylic paintings and a few 3D art. We prefer to mix contemporary art with rural French and English antiques. French country furniture – equivalent to cherry dining table and chairs and cane armchairs – were collected mainly from the antique shops that predominated on the northwest end of Bleecker St. in West Village. We’re delighted the way it all got here together so perfectly!”
